Understanding ADHD

What it is

ADHD is a difference in how the brain manages attention, activity and impulses. It begins in childhood, though many people aren't diagnosed until adulthood. It has nothing to do with intelligence or effort: people with ADHD often work harder than anyone to keep up.

How it shows up

Some people are mostly inattentive: losing things, drifting off, struggling to start or finish. Some are mostly restless and quick to act. Many are both. It tends to look different in adults than in children, and it is often missed in girls and women.

What helps

Understanding how your own attention works, then building routines and tools around it instead of fighting it. Therapy helps with organization, time, big feelings and the shame that years of "try harder" can leave. For children, caregivers and teachers are part of the plan. A doctor can talk with you about medication.

When to reach out

It's time when attention or restlessness keeps getting in the way at school, at work or at home. Therapy can help with the day-to-day whether or not there is a diagnosis yet.

Common Questions

Do I need an ADHD diagnosis to start?

No. You can reach out about attention, focus or behavior concerns with or without a diagnosis, and our team will help you find the next step.

Can you help my child with ADHD?

Yes. We work with children and teens, and caregivers are included when clinically appropriate. Parenting support, at our Avondale office, can help with routines and behavior at home.

What ages do you work with?

We work with children from birth through age 17, and with adults 18 and older.
