Understanding Anxiety

Why it happens

Anxiety is the body's alarm. It is meant to switch on when something is wrong and switch off when the danger has passed. For some people the alarm goes off too easily or stays on too long. Stress, a hard stretch of life, family history and what a person has been through can all play a part. It is not a weakness, and it is not something you chose.

Why it sticks

Avoiding what makes you anxious brings relief in the moment, which is why it's so tempting. Over time, though, the list of things to avoid tends to grow, and life gets smaller. Worry works the same way: going over a problem again and again feels like doing something about it, while the problem stays where it was.

What helps

Anxiety responds well to therapy. Most approaches teach two things: ways to settle the body, and ways to face what you've been avoiding in small, planned steps, with support. Sleep, movement and cutting back on caffeine help some people too. If you wonder about medication, a doctor can talk that through with you.

When to reach out

It's time when worry is costing you sleep, keeping you from things you want or need to do, or wearing on the people around you. You don't have to be sure it's "bad enough." If you're asking the question, it's worth a conversation.

Common Questions

Can you help my child or teen with anxiety?

Yes. We work with children and teens, and caregivers are included when clinically appropriate.

What happens at the first appointment?

It's mostly a conversation about what's been going on and what you'd like to change. You can share as much or as little as feels right, and ask how your clinician works.

Do I need a diagnosis before I reach out?

No. Tell us what's been going on, and our team will help you find the next step.
