There's No Right Way to Grieve

Grief is a natural response to loss. It has no timetable and no set stages. Counseling gives you a caring place for the memories and the feelings, and helps you carry both the love and the loss as you return to daily life.

Understanding Grief

What grief is

Grief is the response to losing someone or something that mattered: a person, a pregnancy, a marriage, health, a home, a future you had pictured. It is not an illness. It can bring sadness, anger, guilt, relief and numbness, sometimes all in one afternoon.

How it moves

Grief doesn't follow stages in order. It comes in waves that are close together at first and further apart with time, and it often returns on birthdays, holidays and anniversaries. People in the same family grieve differently, which can feel lonely.

What helps

Time, people who will listen without hurrying you, and room for both the memories and the pain. Counseling offers that room, and help with the practical parts: getting through hard dates, talking with children about the loss, and returning to daily life without feeling you are leaving the person behind.

When to reach out

Any time you want company in it. It's especially worth reaching out when, many months on, the grief is as heavy as it was at the start, or when it is hard to eat, sleep or work.
